A belated happy Easter to you.
I spent this years Easter with my Grandma, it was so lovely to have that time with her, she lives quite far away so I don’t see her as much as I’d like. It was also a great reminder to me of how important it is to keep healthy and active throughout life. At the grand old age of 91 and 3/4 (I believe counting in fractions is allowed again past a certain age!) she still lives in a 3bed house on her own, gets up and down stairs ok and can get out of a low chair with no problems. All I can do is watch in awe and keep my fingers crossed I will be like that at her age.
My Grandma puts it down to an active life, I’m not talking about going to the gym 3-times a week – I don’t think they really existed when she was younger – but a general level of daily activity. From running a shop to running a hotel and a love of gardening, her body has been kept strong and mobile and she is benefiting from remaining independent and able to stay in her own home well into her later years.
Our lives have become so busy and sedentary with office work, long car journeys and often business trips overseas, most of us then tend to reach for the sofa at the end of a long day and unwind in front of the TV or computer. However it is only by using our bodies that we keep our bones and muscles strong for our future. So if you can get to a gym or just don’t like that environment then don’t forget all the other ways you can keep strong and healthy:
- Get out a go for a walk – none of us live very far from some beautiful countryside
- With the longer days a bit of gardening can be quite a workout
- Use the stairs at work or on the trains instead of the lift/escalator
- A thorough spring clean of the house can get up a bit of a sweat
- A great tip if you know someone in the prime of their life – get them to change where things are kept in the kitchen once in a while. It makes them have to reach and bend in different ways and directions to keep up their mobility.
I hope you all live into a healthy old age, but remember it’s what you do when your young that keeps your body strong for your future.
To a strong and healthy life,
Lorna
