Gait Analysis

Gait AnaysisThe bones and soft tissues of the foot and ankle are designed specifically to accommodate an efficient and effective walking action. Unfortunately this can sometimes be compromised either due to structural variations, postural habits or bad footwear. This can result in the foot not being able to move correctly and thus puts extra stress and strain elsewhere to compensate. Common areas that are affected include the foot itself, the knee, hip and back. Gait analysis is designed to determine if such compensations are occurring and the best course of action to resolve the symptoms.

The assessment starts with the joints of the ankle and foot in a non-weight bearing position. This is to check the ranges of movements required are available and the basic mechanics for walking are working.

The foot is then assessed whilst standing, to check weight-bearing does not induce movement restrictions. Then finally you will be observed walking and performing functional tests to clarify how your body is adapting to any restrictions found.

Prescription Orthotics can then be made, where necessary (this may need to be done in another session). These are insoles created specifically for your individual requirements. You will be reassessed when wearing them to ensure they are correcting properly. A follow-up appointment is then booked in the next 4-6 weeks to be sure the benefits are being maintained and work with the body on adapting to your new way of walking.
